Vibe coder, developer or agency: who should build your app?
Three very different ways to get software built. Each is the right answer for somebody. Here's how to work out which one is right for you.

If you need something built, you now have three quite different options. They’re not ranked from worst to best. They suit different jobs, and picking the wrong one is how projects end up late, over budget, or perfectly built for a problem you no longer have.
The short version
| Vibe coder | Developer | Agency | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Speed to first version | Days | Weeks | Weeks to months |
| Cost | Lowest | Middle | Highest |
| Best at | Prototypes, internal tools, small products | Complex logic, scale, long-lived systems | Big projects needing design, build and management together |
| Biggest risk | Security and maintainability gaps | Slower than you’d like | Expensive and harder to change direction |
| You manage | Fairly closely | Moderately | Lightly, at a price |
Those are generalisations, of course. Many developers now work largely with AI, and the best vibe coders know a lot about code. The labels describe how someone mainly works, not how good they are.
When a vibe coder is the right call
- You need to test an idea quickly before spending serious money on it.
- It’s an internal tool for your team, where the users are forgiving and the stakes are manageable.
- You need landing pages, calculators, booking tools or dashboards.
- You want to see and change things quickly, and you’re happy to give feedback often.
- Your budget is tight and speed matters more than perfection.
The upside is huge. You can go from conversation to working version in days, change direction cheaply, and learn what your users actually want before committing to a big build.
When a developer is the right call
- The software is your business, and it needs to keep working for years.
- There’s complex logic: pricing rules, scheduling, anything with lots of edge cases.
- You’re handling payments, health data or other sensitive information at any real scale.
- You expect lots of users from early on.
- You need it to fit cleanly into existing systems.
Developers who use AI well are often only a little slower than vibe coders, with much stronger foundations. They’ll also push back more, which can be annoying and is often valuable.
When an agency is the right call
- You need design, building, testing and project management in one package.
- The project is big, with a fixed deadline and several people on your side to keep happy.
- You’d rather pay more to manage less.
Agencies cost more because you’re paying for coordination and continuity, not just building. That’s a fair trade on large projects and a poor one on small ones.
The combination that often wins
For many businesses the best answer is a mix: a vibe coder to build fast, with an experienced developer reviewing the risky parts.
The vibe coder gets you to a working version in days. The developer spends a few hours checking security, data access, payments and anything that will be hard to change later. You get most of the speed of the first option and most of the safety of the second, for a fraction of agency prices.
Questions that decide it for you
- What happens if this is down for a day? If the answer is “not much”, a vibe coder is very likely fine. If it’s “we lose money and customers”, get a developer involved.
- Will this exist in three years? Long-lived systems deserve stronger foundations.
- Are we still working out what it should be? If yes, speed and cheap changes matter most, which favours vibe coders.
- Who will maintain it? Whoever builds it should leave it in a state that someone else can pick up.
Whoever you hire, judge the work
Whichever route you take, look at what the person or team has actually shipped. Click on it, use it, try to break it. A portfolio of real, working projects tells you more than any job title.
That’s what Vibers profiles are for. Every project shows the tools behind it, how long it took and the maker’s story of building it.
When you post a job on Vibers, each private pitch links straight to that work, so you’re judging the portfolio and not just the pitch.
